Rory McIlroy misses pro-am with food poisoning, aiming for HSBC Champions

SHANGHAI — Rory McIlroy spent another day in his hotel trying to recover from food poisoning ahead of the HSBC Champions.

McIlroy showed up at Sheshan International on Wednesday with hopes of playing the pro-am. But after hitting a few shots on the range, he felt pain in his stomach and decided to stop. He thinks another day of rest will allow him to play in the opening round.

McIlroy is in the same group as Rickie Fowler and Dustin Johnson in the final World Golf Championship this year.

McIlroy is leading the Race to Dubai by a comfortable margin over Danny Willett, so it’s important for him to not miss this week. McIlroy has played consistently well in the HSBC Champions. What he wants now is make sure he can play.
