Golf Balls Falling From The Sky

It was partly cloudy with a definite chance of golf-ball showers at Sarkisian Farms driving range in Andover on Friday afternoon.

Although the shower was man-made and lasted only 15 seconds, 234 golf balls fell from the sky above a marked hole on the driving range as a fundraising event sponsored by Philips Healthcare employees for the American Heart Association Heart Walk. A shiny red helicopter made its way over the driving range on Chandler Road around 12:30 p.m., to pour numbered golf balls from its side door.

Each golf ball that was purchased by American Heart Association supporters sold for $10 and was marked with a number identifying its owner. With 234 golf balls purchased, the total amount raised was $2,340. Half of the fundraising proceeds were donated to the American Heart Association and the other half were awarded to the owner of the golf ball that either fell into the hole or landed closest to it.

The event was sponsored by Ellen Corning, an executive assistant at the international healthcare company’s Andover office, who was the leader of Philips’ HeartStompers Heart Walk team. Many of the company’s Heart Walk teams put on events throughout the year to raise money for their donation to the association’s Heart Walk.

“I got the idea from a golf tournament I attended,” Corning said. “This was our first attempt with this kind of event, so it was definitely a learning experience, but we’re excited to hold it again next year.”
