THE RUNDOWN
ATLANTA – Baylor women’s golf trails Southern California 1-2-2 in the semifinals of the inaugural East Lake Cup at East Lake Golf Club. The match was suspended due to darkness on Monday and will resume at 6:30 a.m. CT Tuesday.
Baylor’s Louise Gateau-Chovelon is 1-up on USC’s Gabriella Chen thru 11 holes, giving Baylor its only lead in the five matches. Laura Lonardi is all-square with USC’s Tiffany Chan through 10 holes, and Lauren Whyte is all-square with USC’s Karen Chung through 17 holes. Maggie Beth Byersis 3-down with five holes remaining against USC’s Robynn Ree, and the Trojans won the only completed match of the day when Kyung Kim defeated BU’s Giovana Maymon, 6-and-4.
The Bears trailed for the majority of the day, but they took their first lead late in the day when Whyte won her 13th and 14th holes to take a 1-up lead, while Lonardi won her seventh and eighth holes to turn a 1-down deficit into a 1-up lead.
Duke leads Stanford 4-1 in the other semifinal match. The winners of the two matches will face off to claim the inaugural East Lake Cup, while the other two teams will play a consolation match.
HIGHLIGHTS
• Louise Gateau-Chovelon won her fourth and fifth holes and sixth holes to turn a 1-down deficit into a 2-up lead.
• Laura Lonardi won her seventh and eighth holes to turn a 1-down deficit into a 1-up lead.
• Lauren Whyte has been in a close match throughout against USC’s Karen Chung. Neither player has led by more than one hole, and they’ve halved nine of 17 holes.
• Lonardi has halved six holes, won two and lost two.
• Gateau-Chovelon has won three holes, halved six and lost two.
• Maggie Beth Byers has won three holes, halved four and lost six.
• Whyte has won four holes, halved nine and lost four.
• Giovana Maymon won one hole, halved six and lost seven.
