The Hombre Golf Club in Panama City Beach has a regular member who might be the female Tiger Woods, according to the rest of the club’s members. Her name is Cameron Fish, and she is only 16 years old!
Even though her five handicap is something any seasoned golfer would love to have, and even though she has a room full of trophies, this young lady says she has a long way to go if she wants to prove herself on the course.
“I started whenever I was about three with plastic clubs,” said Cameron. “Then my dad took me into lessons and camps whenever I was seven and by the time I was nine, I was already playing competitively.”
She also admits:
“I’m really competitive. Very competitive.”
Her competitive nature is one of the factors that make her game so good, but Cameron realizes it isn’t always going to be easy.
“I don’t think anyone is a natural at golf. I feel like golf’s the most frustrating sport and you just have to practice the most at it. It’s really hard,” said Cameron.
She had her share of learning about hard work and perseverance from her time on the course and she has advice for others her age.
“If you’re a young person and you’re looking to play sports, golf is a really good game. It builds a lot of integrity and courage and self control.”
Cameron is a sophomore at Arnold High School where she is part of the Lady Marlins golf team. Her powerful swing is a part of the reasons she landed at number 16 t state rankings. However, she says, “I have to work my butt off to be where I stand in the rankings. But I think that’s the fun part of it. You just get to work so much and then at the end it all pays off.”
Cameron has a lot of great goals for her future.
“My plans are obviously college and I’m working on that right now. And then whenever I get to college, whether it be on scholarship or not, I’m gonna focus on possibly getting on the LPGA. And if it doesn’t work out I’d like to be a golf instructor and work with little kids. It’s just fun to hit around the ball and hit on this green, this little ball, you’re trying to get in the hole. It’s just fun.”
